Pair of Midcentury Modern Klismos Side Chairs by Harold Schwartz for Romweber

This rare and dramatic pair of side chairs were realized by the esteemed Mid-Century Modern Designer Harold Schwartz for the Romweber Furniture Co. in America, circa 1960. Handmade in handrubbed walnut with brass details throughout, these chairs have inimitably clean, modernist, and forward looking lines that appear as contemporary today as they did when they were created more than five decades ago. Realized in handrubbed walnut, each chair offers sinuously curved back stiles that taper to their rounded tops that peak out just above the seat backs. These stiles secure to the hourglass form backs. The seats are gently curved, mirroring the convex angles of the back supports, and are undergirded by sculptural x-form aprons also in handrubbed walnut. Each chair sits on four cylindrical klismos style legs with conical brass sabots with protruding circular caps at their base. With their iconic form- instantly recognizable to midcentury design connoisseurs- and understated, yet dramatic silhouette, these chairs would be a winning addition to any style of interior. It has been newly reupholstered in a taupe and smoked sapphire Holly Hunt tweed and restored to mint condition.
