This rare and iconic set of eight dining chairs were realized by Vladimir Kagan- one of the most celebrated designers of the twentieth century- circa 1970. Kagan once reflected that chairs are "uniquely the best expression of design. They encompass more of the challenges by which I live and work than any other single component of furniture." This stunning set of eight- two with arms, six without- were realized in dark stained walnut and newly reupholstered in an smoked platinum hued mohair. Inspired by modernist vocabulary- culled from a diversity of influences including Japanese architecture- these chairs embody the economy of design and avant garde form encapsulate Kagan's uniquely compelling vision. They retain- in the words of Tom Ford- "that potency and flair" and that "wow factor" that continues to make them appear "new and fresh" after more than 4 decades. They maintain a presence that appears simultaneously of the time and yet daring, sensuous, and timeless. They are documented on pages 138-139 of Vladimir Kagan: A Life Time of Avant Garde Design (2015). They are signed Vladimir Kagan with the original labels on verso reading "Handmade in the Workshops of Vladimir Kagan Designs New York". They are in mint restored condition.
