About

This pair of arm chairs represents the sublime marriage of two legendary designers with divergent sensibilities: Angelo Donghia and Clarence House. Donghia designed the interiors for the Opera Club at Lincoln Center and the S.S. Norway. His clients comprised everyone from East Coast aristocracy to Hollywood elite, including Ralph Lauren, Neil Simon, and Liza Minelli. Celebrated for clean lines and purity of materials, Donghia represents one of the most influential interior designers of the latter half of the 20th Century. These striking armchairs, with their elegant curvilinear streamlined forms, help to explain his enduring appeal. They have been reupholstered in exuberant cubist patterned fabric offering jewel tones of sapphire, citrine, amber and ruby. The upholstery was produced by Clarence House- one of the world's premiere textile companies- renowned for producing custom fabrics using the finest European textiles. Additionally, the chairs feature rectangular tapered front legs and saber hind legs in ebonized walnut. These chairs embody an Art Deco revival aesthetic infused with a modernist 80s sensibility, reading as both sophisticated and whimsical. They would be outstanding accent pieces in any style of interior from classic Art Deco to Mid Century, and especially in any room that incorporates elements from the 1970s and/or 80s. They are in excellent vintage condition.
