Mid-Century Modern Sterling Silver Tray with Stylized Grape and Vine Motifs
Mid-Century Modern Sterling Silver Tray with Stylized Grape and Vine Motifs
This beautiful sterling silver decorative tray was realized in Great Britain, circa 1950. It features a circular centre with rounded scalloped sides that offer stylized grape and vine detailing in the interstices between the adjoining sides. The grape and vine- a Greek reference to Dionysus- represents a leitmotif throughout the history of design. Here these historically important motifs, with their finely striated leaves, cluster of spherical forms and contorting stems appear highly stylized, rendered in a manner referential to Art Nouveau. The clean lines of the silhouette provide a dynamic and modern counterpoint to these ornate details, however, making the piece as versatile as it is aesthetically compelling. While it is a perfectly functional tray- ideal for presenting candies, hors d'oeuvres or whatever the heart's content- it is also an objet d'art in its own right that promises to add a touch of elegance to any side table or étagère that it graces. It is in excellent condition. Signed with hallmarks on the bottom "Sterling 256". 454 grams.
