Art Deco Brass Pulls & Leather Wrapped Base Paldao Wood Cabinet by Gilbert Rohde
This exceptional Art Deco cabinet, designed by the legendary Gilbert Rohde and crafted in America circa 1940, epitomizes the bold innovation and refined luxury of the era. Made from exquisite Paldao wood, the cabinet’s rich, expressive grain is beautifully showcased, imparting a sense of depth and warmth. The sleek exterior is further elevated by sculptural brass pulls, whose organic yet deliberate forms contrast elegantly against the clean, modern lines of the design. The undulating motif of the pulls beautifully relates to the subtle curvatures and graceful geometric balance of the piece, elevated with a beautiful curvilinear base evoking the linear detailing of the pulls. The material of the pulls is also noteworthy. Formed in brass, which was used before the entry of the United States into the second world War, after which the pulls were formed in wood because of the use of brass for the war effort, indicating this piece was fabricated pre-1941.
The piece is grounded by a leather-wrapped base in a golden hue, which introduces a lovely element of texture and sophistication. A testament to Rohde’s visionary approach to modern American design, this cabinet seamlessly marries form, function, and artistry. Its timeless elegance ensures it will serve as both a functional storage solution and a sculptural statement in any interior. In Mint Restored Condition.
