Mid-Century Hand-Blown Murano Glass 5-Arm Chandelier by Barovier & Toso
This stunning Mid-Century Modernist Hand-Blown Murano Glass Five Arm Chandelier W/ Filigree Detailing & Oil Rubbed Bronze Fittings by Barovier & Toso originates from Italy, Circa 1950. This chandelier features a classical form with understated elements, all of which feature remarkable detailing and precise execution of materials. With five curvilinear glass arms expanding from a central oil rubbed bronze housing, each of the five arms curve upwards featuring rounded shades with filigree detailing, a timeless technique in Murano glass art which in this instance creates a precise geometric weave of white glass within transparent glass. From the central housing which holds the arms of the chandelier, a rod of glass rises with a fluted detail and a canopy rendered in glass with matching filigree detailing. A bold and materially exquisite fixture, this piece serves as an incredible example of the quality of Barovier & Toso, and the materials and design motifs of Mid-Century Modernism. This piece will style well in a wide array of spaces and settings, from Mid-Century Modernist to Contemporary and Minimal Interiors. Newly rewired to American Standards, this piece accommodates five Edison base bulbs achieving up to 500 watts of light. In Excellent Vintage Condition. Barovier & Toso is a Murano glass manufacturer whose corporate lineage is traditionally dated to 1295, when a Barovier glass master is recorded in Venetian documents; the present concern emerged from the Barovier family works and the Ferro Toso association, with the name Barovier & Toso in use by the 1940s. The firm’s most consequential twentieth-century figure was Ercole Barovier, born in Murano in 1889, who became manager and artistic director of Vetreria Artistica Barovier & C. in 1926, associated with Ferro Toso in 1936, and remained central to the later Barovier & Toso until 1972.
