Vintage Japanese Satsuma Bead-Design Ceramic Umbrella Stand
This ornate Large Japanese Satsuma Bead-Design Ceramic Umbrella Stand originated in Japan, 20th Century. The piece presents a tall cylindrical form that rises from a molded scalloped base to a matching flared scalloped rim, while the exterior is richly modeled in high relief with an all over textured bead ground punctuated by applied rosette medallions and molded cartouche panels. Each reserved panel is hand painted in polychrome enamels with floral sprays and geometric medallions, and surrounding surfaces are finished in a soft celadon green ground and pale cream reserves that accent the raised modeling. The stand displays meticulous hand modeling and refined brushwork and fine incised tooling defines petal and foliate details beneath a glossy glaze. The painted panels show careful brushwork in varying tones and precise outlines that complement the modeled forms. Decorative banding encircles the top and bottom and establishes a rhythmic vertical composition that suits prominent placement. The underside is signed. As a decorative and functional object it is a refined example of Satsuma ceramic produced in Japan during the 20th Century. Excellent Vintage Condition.
